David wrote to Mrs. Katherina Werner Hardy, as he invariably addressed her letters, two or three times each week, and the minute she received his letters, she promptly answered with her own epistles of undying love and affection. If she thought she had missed David during his years in Saskatoon, it did not compare to the longing she now experienced. Almost every night, Katherina would awaken from a deep sleep yearning for him, wanting him to be with her, lying beside her in her bed. Then when she was engulfed by blissful slumber once again, she would frequently dream of him as he embraced her passionately in his strong, loving arms. In the morning, Katherina descended the stairs from her loft with litheness in her step, a serene smile on her face, and an air of contentment bordering on smugness, as though during her repose she had been enlightened with the answers to the great mysteries of the universe.

Naturally, the Mohr family was the first to observe Katherina’s transformation, although Margareta was the only member to recognize the most likely reason for the change in her niece’s demeanour. As far as the men were aware, they just knew she was different in an appealing way, and even Peter started to join his parents in the parlour as they discoursed with Katherina in the evenings. The women of Neudorf returned to the dress shop day after day, hoping that some of Katherina’s magical sparkle would dust down upon their shoulders, like the fluffy snowflakes that fall from the sky on a March morning as the sun shines brightly through their glistening whiteness. The Silent Critics were quick to notice what they termed the ‘increased haughtiness’ in an already proud and arrogant Katherina Werner. There were few, if any, people in the German Lutheran townships who would have ever questioned the young proprietor’s confidence and maturity, but none could have known that now she had become a woman.

It was not long before Margareta’s supposition was confirmed. The first morning that Katherina arrived at breakfast, nibbled on a slice of dry bread, and asked for a cup of weak tea was proof enough for Margareta that her hypothesis was correct. Still, she kept her conjecture to herself, knowing full well that it was only a matter of time before her uninformed niece would need to bring her into her confidence. Maintaining her silence, however, did not prevent Margareta from beginning to formulate a plan, and she knew she could completely trust the integrity of the couple with whom she would need to carry out her subterfuge. Her supportive friends, Dr. and Mrs. Spitznagel, would be only too happy to come to the Mohr home to provide for Katherina’s medical attention and ultimately, when her time came, for her confinement.

With the exception of occasional nausea and slight dizziness when she arose from her bed, Katherina had never felt better in her life. Indeed, as she awoke each morning, she experienced a profound sense of peace and harmony within her being, as though she had been blessed.
